VII & Fundamental Score

Lesson 4 of 8

What Fundamental Score actually measures

Four inputs roll up into one number — not a valuation call, a quality-of-business call.

Fundamental Score (FSI) is VII's sibling metric, but it answers a completely different question. Where VII asks "where does the price sit," Fundamental Score asks "how sound is the business," and deliberately has no valuation inputs at all — no P/E, no P/B, nothing about price.

It's built from four pillars: quality (a Piotroski-style score of financial health), profitability (return on equity and return on capital employed), leverage (debt-to-equity, lower is better), and growth (revenue, profit, and EPS growth blended together). Each is scored 0–100 on its own, then combined into one composite, weighted roughly 40% quality, 25% profitability, 15% leverage, 20% growth.

Keeping valuation out of this score is a deliberate design choice, not an oversight. If Fundamental Score also rewarded a low P/E, then "a VII value-zone stock with a high Fundamental Score" would just be a roundabout way of saying "a cheap stock," which is circular. Keeping the two independent means a high Fundamental Score is a genuine second opinion, not an echo of the first one.
