Lesson 3 of 8

Deep Value vs. just "cheap"

Deep Value is a pure price flag — the stock broke below its own 52-week low. A strong Fundamental Score is what turns that into a real opportunity instead of a falling knife.

It's tempting to read "Deep Value" as a verdict — the market has this one wrong, it's a bargain. That's not what the tag means. Deep Value is computed purely from price: the stock traded below its own trailing 52-week low. It says nothing at all about whether the underlying business is sound.

A stock can be genuinely Deep Value and still be a falling knife — a company whose earnings are collapsing for good reason, where the price break is the market correctly pricing in bad news. VII on its own can't tell the difference, because it was never designed to; that's not the question it answers.

The question it doesn't answer is exactly what Fundamental Score is for. A Deep Value stock with a Good or Strong Fundamental Score is a meaningfully different situation than a Deep Value stock with a Weak one — the price break plus a sound business is the combination worth a second look, not the price break alone.
