Why the market moved

Indian markets ended Wednesday's session in the red, though losses at the headline level were modest — the NIFTY 50 fell 0.34% and the SENSEX slipped 0.19%, while broader markets saw steeper declines, with the NIFTY Midcap 100 down 1.58% and the NIFTY Smallcap 100 off 2.37%. IT stocks were a clear bright spot, with NIFTY IT rising 2.88%, lifted by strong gains in Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, and TCS, which helped cushion the overall fall. On the other side, Capital Goods, Chemicals, and Power sectors were the biggest drags, and banking stocks weighed on sentiment, with Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, and HDFC Bank among the notable losers. Market breadth was weak, with only 16 of the 50 NIFTY stocks advancing against 34 declining, and India VIX rose sharply by 6.29% to 15.70, pointing to heightened caution among participants on Wednesday.
